To increase our impact and further our mission to support more mamas in their journey to motherhood, we are proud to partner with Every Mother Counts. Every Mother Counts is a nonprofit working to improve access to quality, respectful and equitable maternity care worldwide.

Every Mother Counts was founded by Christy Turlington Burns in 2010, following the release of her documentary, No Woman, No Cry. Christy is a maternal health advocate dedicated to understanding the challenges and opportunities for improving global maternity care. After experiencing complications with the birth of her daughter, Grace, in 2003, Christy learned that hundreds of women die every year from lack of access to maternity care. Of her life-changing experience that lead to the creation of Every Mother Counts, Christy shares:

“There is a lot we already know about how to prevent pregnancy- and childbirth-related complications, but not enough political will or resources dedicated to this issue. The belief that knowledge is power is only true if it is clear what needs to be done to make change and, ultimately, to prevent unnecessary or harmful events if we can.”

Shockingly, it is estimated that “303,000 women die around the world as a result of complications of pregnancy and childbirth, every year, that’s one woman every two minutes.” The reality is that many women experience roadblocks when trying to secure the support and care they need. These roadblocks can be disrespectful treatment, discrimination, harmful practices, and shortages. But, according to the World Health Organization, almost all global maternal deaths can be prevented when women have access to quality, respectful, and equitable maternal health care.

The mission at the heart of Every Mother Counts is to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere. They currently work in Bangladesh, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Tanzania, and the United States and are committed to supporting groups led by women and local communities. By partnering with local organizations that serve historically marginalized communities, they help deliver high-impact, low-cost solutions to improve maternal health outcomes.

With Every Mother Counts, Christy hopes to raise awareness and educate the public about access to maternal care. To boost this mission, 10% of all Dermaclara proceeds go to Every Mother Counts.
